Between 1346 and 1350 the world was being hatred by disease. About a million reported killed by travelers in Central Asia and the Middle East. Even Europe and northern Africa had felt the effects with approximately a third of the tribe dead. Because of the discolored wounds of the infected, the disease became known as the Black Death. Theres a lot speculation as to where it originated, but no definite answer. But origin doesnt really matter, save because the disease was spread so quickly by change magnitude trading along trading routes such as the silk roads and war, it brought about many cultural and economic consequences.
Although how or where the Black Death first came about is unclear, how it was adapted to spread into Europe. In 1343 the Mongols under the lead of Janibeg besieged Caffa and Tana after a rubbish between Italians and Muslims in Tana. The siege only lasted about a year because in 1344 an Italian relief force was able to kill 15,000 Mongols and destroyed their siege machines. Janibeg tried once over again in 1345 but failed because of an epidemic of abhorrence that devastated his men.

Although base on the situation it would seem more like a solution to the problem of disease plaguing the Mongols during the time of a siege.
