The end of the Civil War found workers flocking to the cities for factory jobs. They were change with hope for a better life. Their optimism soon faded. Immigrants would generally get under ones skin into in the cities and take up factory work in that location to make a living. Working-class and immigrant families a good deal needed to impart many family members, including women and children, work in factories to survive. The working conditions in factories were often harsh. Hours were long, typically ten to twelve hours a day. Working conditions were oftentimes unsafe and led to deadly accidents. Tasks tended to be divided for efficiencys saki which led to repetitive and monotonous work for employees. Those who complained about distressing working conditions or low wages were fired. Workers fought their often humbling work conditions by uniting together into collective groups and union.

The development of American industrial might in the 1870s and 1880s was paralleled by the emergence of unions representing the workers. Many early efforts to organize workers in the coupled States saw their inception in Pennsylvania. These unions made attempts to control pricing, assay to unite efforts for a single craft or operated by intimidation and violence. Attempts to strength existing unions were crushed by management.

Foremost among the early labor organizations was the Knight of Labor. In 1869, the Noble and Holy Order of the Knights of Labor , which initially offered a more reasoned approach to solving labor problems, was naturalized in Philadelphia. At its inception, the KOL comprised nine tailors whose leader was Uriah S. Stephens. The organization believed that its predecessors had failed by limiting membership; the Knights of Labor proposed to organize both good and unskilled workers in the same union and opened their doors to blacks and women.
